Recently, Principal Matt Ryan of East Hartford High School (EHHS) sat down with seniors Oswaldo Guzman and Olivia John to discuss their experiences in the Academy of Finance program and their future aspirations. Both students are part of this specialized program, designed to give students a head start in the financial world by teaching them essential skills in business, finance, and professional development.
The conversation, shared on EHHS’s Instagram (@ehhs_principal_ryan), showcased how the Academy of Finance has helped Oswaldo and Olivia develop valuable skills, gain internships, envision bright futures and host networking breakfasts.
Olivia John: Inspiration from Family Business
Olivia explained that her interest in the Academy of Finance stemmed from her involvement in a family business she co-founded with her mother called Lauren Simone Publishing House. This venture gave Olivia an early insight into the world of finance, as she not only wrote stories but also supported others in bringing their own stories to life. Through Lauren Simone Publishing, Olivia learned about budgeting, marketing, and the creative process behind publishing.
During the conversation, Principal Ryan asked Olivia if she illustrated the books herself. Olivia explained that while she enjoys the creative side of the business, they work with professional illustrators to bring each story to life, allowing her to focus on storytelling and business operations. This experience with her family business has shaped her understanding of finance and inspired her to pursue further studies that blend creativity and business.
Oswaldo Guzman: Passionate About a Finance Career
Oswaldo shared his journey in the Academy of Finance, where he’s developed skills and connections that have broadened his perspective on career options. Through internships and hands-on learning, he’s gained practical knowledge about finance, giving him the confidence to pursue further education in the field. Oswaldo envisions a future in corporate finance, aiming to make a positive impact within a major financial institution.
